About

The key element in a logistics chain is TRANSPORTATION system, which joints the separated activities. TRANSPORTATION occupies one-third of the amount in the logistics costs and TRANSPORTATION systems influence the performance of logistics system.

This is transportaion management

transportation management is a one set of activity in a logistical area.

Rail Transportation

many advantages when we use rail transportation one of that is Capacity, Trains are capable of carrying larger number of passengers and greater volumes of goods that other means of transportation cannot handle

Sea Transportation

Ship transport is watercraft carrying people (passengers) or goods (cargo). Sea transport has been the largest carrier of freight throughout recorded history. Although the importance of sea travel for passengers has decreased due to aviation, it is effective for short trips and pleasure cruises. Transport by water is cheaper than transport by air, despite fluctuating exchange rates and CAF charges to account for such.

Containerization

many benefits of containerization one of that is Door-to-Door (House-to-House)- The greatest benefits of Containerization are realized when the shipper uses the container to carry goods directly from his or her premises to his or her customer's location. Perhaps the only time the container will be opened while enroute is for Customers inspection. Reduced susceptibility to pilferage and theft, elimination of multiple handling of individual items of cargo and the least possible exposure to the elements are all attractive features of Door-to-Door service. In utilizing this type of service, the shipper accepts the additional responsibility' of ensuring that cargo is properly stowed and secured in the container, precluding damage to the cargo, container or transport vehicle

Air transportation

The movement of passengers and cargo by aircraft such as airplanes and helicopters. Air transportation has become the primary means of common-carrier traveling. Greatest efficiency and value are obtained when long distances are traveled, high-value payloads are moved, immediate needs must be met, or surface terrain prevents easy movement or significantly raises transport costs. Although the time and cost efficiencies obtained decrease as distance traveled is reduced, air transport is often worthwhile even for relatively short distances. Air transportation also provides a communication link, which is sometimes vital, between the different groups of people being served.

International Competition Port For Malaysia

Part of the regional system overview is to establish the port facilities that are important players in the SE Asia region outside Malaysia s borders. The main shipping lines connecting East Asia and the west American coast to Europe pass through the Malacca straits. The routes through Sunda or Lombok are currently underutilized partly due to lack of infrastructure although they present some advantages in terms of accessibility, like greater depths and less traffic. The unique vessel concentration of the Malacca straits presents an opportunity for expansion for the regional port industry and fiercer competition at the same time.

Nature of competition
Generally for the port industry the competition relies on:
(i)  Attracting cargoes for shipping from the mainland
(ii)  Attracting transshipment traffic from one hub port to another.

In Malaysia both these cases occur. Malaysian freighters have the option of choosing Singapore for their shipping needs, due to the proximity and good mainland connections. At the same time Malaysian and other SE Asia ports are competing for the transshipment market. The latter is the most prominent competition arena  Since bulk freight is rarely if ever serviced by non-national ports (only special cases of lack of equipment or dramatic price differences would justify a different strategy), the rival or potentially rival ports are examined here in terms of their container handling capacity. Malaysia has a competition such as:

Singapore
Singapore Port Authority (PSA) operates the biggest port in the SE Asia region and is second in the year 2013 global ranking after Shanghai. As a result, it dominates the regional market. In 2011 it had a 15.5m TEU throughput. Regional competition, though, resulted in a 9% reduction compared with the 2000 container volume. Cheaper tariffs and deals drove MAERSK Sealand and Evergreen to PTP. PSA is a government owned port, which has undergone partial privatization. Additionally to the national market, PSA has ventures in nine foreign ports (Dalian, Fuzhou, Guangzhou, China; Genoa, Venice, Civitavecchia and Livorno in Italy; Sine in Portugal Aden in Middle East and Picava in India; of importance are also the operations of a
PSA Marau Terminal in Brunei) Beyond the foreign competition, it faces also small-scale internal
competition by the recently founded Jurong Port.  The market segment that is attracted to PKA is quite different than that of PSA. Based on a container flow model, the Maritime Policy Planning Model (MPPM), indicates in the container transshipment market PKA will appeal mostly to Western Asia, ANZ Pacific Islands and other.
Singapore Port

 Indonesia
A bit distanced from the transshipment waterway, Indonesian terminals have a potential to become competitive. Although affected more than Malaysian facilities by the 1997 crisis, Indonesian Ports have regained their position. The two most important Indonesian facilities are the Tanjung Priok and Tanjung Perak:
·        Tanjung Priok
This is a privately owned facility of which Hutchison group owns 50% of the shares. It
features two major terminals: Koja Terminal and Jakarta International Container
Terminal.
Tanjung Priok Port
 ·        Tanjung Perak
This facility handles containers in dedicated as well as conventional multi-purpose berths

3.       Thailand
Thailand hosts a number of industries that present a significant market for international
shipping. A segment of the Thailand s market is captured by the Malaysian ports (mostly
Klang, but also Penang and now PTP) either by use of feeder services or rail. The two
major port facilities that operate in Thailand is Laem Chapang and the Bangkok Port.
Both facilities are owned and operated by the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT).
·         Laem Chabang Port (LCP)
·         Bangkok Port (BKP)
Bangkok Port

4.       Other Countries
The ports described above would be considered the most important potential competitors
for Malaysia. Other potentially competitive ports in the region, which either lack the
facilities and infrastructure for competitiveness or are too remote, are the following.
·         Philippines: Manila Port
·         Brunei Darussalam: Muara Port
·         Vietnam: Saigon Port
·         Myanmar: Yangon Port
·         Cambodia: Port of Sihanoukville (Kampong Saom)
·         Sri Lanka: Colombo

THE IMPORTANCE OF SHIPPING INDUSTRY IN MALAYSIA

Create Diplomatic Relation between Malaysia

Malaysia is one of country that still in development level. In term of economies, Malaysia has create many agreement and many relation to others development country to get the better benefits and more opportunity to improve our economies level. So, shipping industry is one of the factors that making Malaysia creates much agreement with other country. As we know, shipping industry is popular industry that gives many benefits for logistics activities along with import and export activities. In that case, Malaysia have many Diplomatic Relationship with others development country that have major and absolute advantage. For example, ASEAN China Free Trade Agreements, ASEAN Korea Free Trade Agreements, ASEAN Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreements, and also Malaysia- Pakistan Closer Economic Partnership.

Job Opportunity for Malaysian

Actually, shipping industry established for a long time in Malaysia. But for Academic Terms, it’s consider as new course or new field in Malaysia compare with other field such as Medic, Engineering and Human Resource. Activities that include in this industry are shipping schedule, shipping activities, shipping planner, port operations, shipbuilding or repairing and offshore oil and gas exploration. I had make some research about the demand in this industry and one of it is :Senior Vice-President - Industry Intelligence, Malaysia Industry Group for High Technology (MIGHT) Datuk Ir Kamarulzaman Zainal said medium-sized ships are now, increasingly in demand, particularly from the oil and gas industry, both within and outside the country.(source: http://www.thestar.com.my/ ). So, the concept is, when there is increasing in demand, then the operation of the logistics activities will be increase. In addition, if the operation increase, that’s means the manpower should be increase in number and that will make greater job opportunity in this industry. Furthermore, Datuk Ir Kamarulzaman Zainal also said by 2020, MIGHT had set the target for the maritime industry to post a profit of up to RM19 billion, while offering 55,000 job opportunities to locals.

Most cost effective means to ship woard trade

Now a days, many company offers sea freight shipping via container shipping, LCL (Less container load), FCL (Full Container load), bulk shipping, heavy equipment shipping, auto shipping. Customs clearance and refrigerated transport, door-to-door, door-to-port are some other areas of our services. So, many company understands the needs of shipping and value of your goods therefore the Experts not only organizes the sea transport, they also arrange the safe loading and unloading of your goods. They make use of clean, dry containers and do superior kind of packaging of your goods to ensure they are well protected during transit and provides superior and cost effective shipping solutions around the globe. With sea freight, clients place their trust to receive the top class shipping services. It is because, with the use of ships, many things can be reduced, for example the cost of payments to service the ship pretty cheap compared to road transport and air transport and to bring in large quantities.

Increasing the International Trade Of Malaysia
Importance of the Port Industry for Malaysia Malaysia is one of the powerful nations in the SE Asia region, a member of the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle, with aspirations to become a developed country by 2020. The Malaysian economy is based on the export trade of manufactured products, raw materials and petrochemicals. In fact it is placed 13th globally in terms of export quantity. At the same time, Malaysia is an oceanic state, situated next to a major waterway that connects Asia with the west coast of the US and simultaneously with the Middle East and Europe
The importance of sea freight transport and the port industry for this kind of economy is self-evident and it is no surprise that 90% of the total international trade is conducted by sea. The additional opportunity for Malaysian ports of serving as transshipment hubs make them highly valuable assets. Their significance is summarized by the Malaysian Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir in his speech for the IAPH's World Port Conference in.

Llinkage with many economic activities, services and industries
Last in the importance of shipping industry in Malaysia is, it have linkage with many economic activities, services and industries. Today's, the sea port plays main role in delivering bulky size of goods and to achieve the cheap cost in delivering the goods. Therefore, the activities at the sea port is increasing daily. The increasing of these activities effects the growth of the economies at the port as well. Among the popular activities at the sea port are loading and unloading, storage of the goods, bonded warehouse, container cargo services and many more. Same goes to the other services that will effects by chance of the growth of these activities at the sea port, for example the road services. Let me explain. There are one customer at Malaysia that want to purchase a car from the other country and let's say a hybrid car from Japan. The procedure from Japan to Malaysia is, the car will be put inside the roll-on-roll-off (RORO) ship before making the shipment, and after the RORO arrive at for example Johor Port, then the car carrier (special designed) will take it, send it to the distributor before it safely arrived to the customer.

Transports 95% of Malaysia’s trade
Its importance to the national development, the Government has placed strong emphasis on the development of transport infrastructure. A total sum of RM61.2 billion was spent for the transportation sector includes of roads, urban transport, rail, ports, and airports. It can make shipper can easily transport the goods through the roads and so on. Malaysia has many trade lanes, so that it is very importance to Malaysia shipping industry. So 95% of trades were transport inside and outside the country. For example, the issue of trading and purchase of gold in Kota Kinabalu. The spilled over effect from the implementation of the various infrastructure projects generated diverse economic activities for the nation.

The advantages and disadvantages of ROAD TRANSPORTATION

In today’s rapidly changing world, the road transportation network system has become very
crucial to boost economic growth or even to perform a physical transformation, domestically and internationally. Same goes to the other mode of transportation, road transportation is a key logistics activity that provide for the movement of materials and goods from point of origin to the point of consumption. In Malaysia, the road transportation network system is one of the most important part of the economic generation as it is a significant impact to the transportation industry and a major player of logistics system. As for this time, what I will be presented to is the overall introduction, characteristics, the advantages and disadvantages, about the road transportation.
As I just wrote at the first paragraph, the road transportation is significant to the activity that provide for the movement of goods. For example, the Pizza Hut delivery use road transportation as their main way to deliver the order to their customer.
CHARACTERISTICS/ADVANTAGE OF ROAD TRANSPORTATION
Road transport contributes in Growth of industries whose product requires quick marketing. Perishable goods  like fish and green vegetables are carried to various consumers quickly even in distant markets through road transportation. Other than that, road transportation also can provide door-to-door service. The main point to provide door-to-door service is to ensure the end user feel easy because they have to wait just in front of their home. The road transportation also only require a relatively small investment by the government which is that's why every country will have the road transportation because it give both government and the transporter benefits. The road transportation is also cheaper than any mode of transportation, in term of buying the prime mover, the whole lorry and so on. And in term of the delivery process, the road transportation also use only a little fuel, maybe some of the transporter use the NGV gas so that the cost will be reduced. Next, the construction and maintenance is also cheaper and easy to handle, than the other mode of transportation.
Well actually, using the road transportation to deliver the goods will saves time. Because the road transportation does not have timetable so the transporter may leave at a time that is suitable. Other than that, the road transportation is the only mode of transport that offers to the whole community alike.
DISADVANTAGE OF ROAD TRANSPORTATION
The road transportation often to involve with traffic congestion. Although it often to say that road transportation will save time in term of delivery, but sometimes the traffic congestion is totally messed-up the whole process. Using the road transportation will also increase the amount of air pollution. Other than that, using the road transportation will have a high probability to involve with the accident, because there are too many big carrier on the road that the road also have people that drive the car, motorcycle bicycle and so on. Next, it is unsuitable for long distance and bulky traffic. This mode of transport is unsuitable and costly for transporting cheap and bulky gods over long distances. Also, the seasonal nature, which is, the motor transport is not as reliable as rail transport. During rainy or flood season, roads become unfit and unsafe for use.

Before I end this session, just a short reminder, next time for part 2, we will be discussed about the critical issue of road transportation. Stay tune for more from us.

The PIPELINE TRANSPORT

Do you know about pipeline transportation?

PIPELINE TRANSPORT::This is one of the types of transportation mode which transport, deliver or send the specific goods through a pipe. Commonly, liquids and gases are sent by this mode. Pipelines are limited in the commodity they haul and also limited in the markets they serve.
Pipelines are very specialized transportation or carrier in that they can transport into a very limited variety product compare to others mode of transportation. Commonly, liquid and gases type of product. The pipeline that uses pneumatic tubes, using compressed air can also transport solid capsules and also coal. For transport of coal usually called as Slurry Lines because the coal is moved in a pulverized form in water.
Basically, pipeline deliver the three major commodities which are Oil (crude & products) ,Natural Gases and Chemicals. Besides that, water for community use also deliver by this mode of transportation.
ADVANTAGES:
The advantages of pipeline had been discussed in this part. Pipeline transportation offered low rates in pipeline industry. In other words, this kind of mode transportation provides low cost service compare with others mode of transportation. Pipeline transportation have large investment for the first part which is to build the pipe and also the control system but offered avery low cost at maintenance service and operation cost compare with others mode. Maintenance service provide for pipeline is a few in numbers where there is a linkage or damage, but the problem for the pipeline is too rare. So, pipelines have high fixed cost but very low variable cost. Besides, the gas and liquid industries also can use the pipeline service not only for transportation, but use it as pipeline inventory act like warehousing function. In addition, pipeline transportation also has one major advantage compare with others mode of transportation which is their dependability. Dependability means the weather condition. Compare with other modes, weather also give important role and also give a big impact to the delivery process. Fortunately, pipelines are very rarely having mechanical failures due to the bad weather condition.
DISADVANTAGE:
The disadvantages of pipeline had been discussed in this part. The speed of pipeline transportation service is too slow. Its consider as disadvantage when the demand increase dramatically, for example. But it does also can be consider as advantage when the pipeline is use as warehousing function. Pipeline also has limited number and specialization of commodities compare with others mode. It is also inflexible because of geographic factor and also need support from other modes of transportation to make a complete delivery when the pipeline is not connect to location needed. That’s means; there is difficult way to achieve a door to door service by this kind of mode.

INFORMATION: RAIL TRANSPORTATION

INFORMATION: RAIL TRANSPORTATION Transport modes are means by which people and freight can achieve mobility. That can be referring to three basic types, depending on over what surface they travel – land, water, and air. That refers to road, rail air, pipelines and sea.
We will discuss about Rail Transportation.
:: Rail transport is best defined of conveyance of passengers and goods by way of wheeled vehicles running on rail track, known as a railway or railroad. The rails are anchored perpendicular to railroad train consists of one or more connected vehicles that run on the rails. Propulsion is commonly provided by a locomotive, which hauls a series of unpowered cars, which can carry passengers or freight. The locomotive can be powered by steam, diesel or by electricity supplied by trackside systems. Alternatively, some or all the cars can be powered, known as a multiple unit. Also, a train can be powered by horses, cables, gravity, pneumatics and gas turbines. Railed vehicles move with much less friction than rubber tires on paved roads, making trains more energy efficient, though not as efficient as ships. Rail Transportation service can be divide by two common uses, which are for passenger and for goods.

So, for passengers, Intercity Trains are long-haul services connecting cities; modern high-speed rail is capable of speeds up to 350 km/h (220 mph), but this requires specially built track. Regional and Commuter Trains feed cities from suburbs and surrounding areas, while intra-urban transport is performed by high-capacity tramways and rapid transits, often making up the backbone of a city's public transport.

For goods transport, Freight Trains, traditionally used box cars, requiring manual loading and unloading of the cargo. Since the 1960s, container trains have become the dominant solution for general freight, while large quantities of bulk are transported by dedicated trains.

RAIL TRANSPORTATION. Basically, Railways are composed of a traced path on which vehicles are bound. They have an average level of physical constrains linked to the types of locomotives and a low gradient is required, particularly for freight. Heavy industries are traditionally linked with rail transport systems, although containerization has improved the flexibility of rail transportation by linking it with road and maritime modes. Road transportation has an average operational flexibility as vehicles can serve several purposes but are rarely able to move outside roads. Maritime transportation or Sea Transportation is the most effective mode to move large quantities of cargo over long distances. Rail is by far the land transportation mode offering the highest capacity with a 23,000 tons fully loaded coal unit train being the heaviest load ever carried. However, vary around the world, often challenging the integration of rail systems.

INNOVATION IN RAIL TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY

Do you know? Innovation is the application of new solutions that meet new requirements, inarticulate needs, or existing market needs. This is accomplished through more effective products, processes, services, technologies, or ideas that are readily available to markets, governments and society. The term innovation can be defined as something original and new that "breaks in to" the market or into society. One usually associates to new phenomena that are important in some way. A definition of the term, in line with these aspects, would be the following: "An innovation is something original, new, and important - in whatever field - that breaks in to (or obtains a foothold in) a market or society. So for all we know, Malaysia have the agreement will see the Spanish IT Indra implement integrated online advanced systems management, data center and communications technology and energy management systems, the other systems. With new technology, Infrastructure expects to have a better control over the rail transportation system real time, leading to more efficient operations and lower costs of IT operations. Sepanyol Indra firm has won the contract to design, build and commission a new integrated control center for the Monorail, Ampang and Kelana Jaya line light rail system in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Two-year contract worth € 28 million, was awarded by the Malaysian National Infrastructure COMPANY firm infrastructure Berhad (Prasarana), and including two years warranty maintenance. All freight lines operated by the infrastructure will be integrated into the new control center, along with the addition of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line, commuter rail and future transportation system in the country. (Spanish firms have already implemented ticketing and access control systems for infrastructure in the Monorail and Light Rail Transit lines in Kuala Lumpur). The agreement will see Indra implement integrated online advanced systems management, data center and communications technologies and energy management system, among other systems. The new control center will be commissioned by Indra will have a sophisticated system of management, which can be used for full integration of all network control and operations elements, and integrated management of all lines. The company will also be responsible for combing the current signaling system and allows remote monitoring and optimization of rolling stock and staff schedules. besides that, the UK infrastructure manager Network Rail has introduced a new technical strategy, which highlights the research and development (R & D) priorities and opportunities for the railroad industry in the last 30 years. This strategy focuses on R & D investment to meet Network Rail main priorities of safety, performance, customer experience, capacity, cost efficiency and sustainability. Following the launch of the entire release train technical strategy (RTS) in December 2012. Network Rail chairman Richard Parry-Jones said that there must be a strong relationship between long-term planning . Their technical ability to be more ambitious on the strengthened cooperation at all levels, across disciplines within Network Rail, the Rail Network and the rail industry, with Europe and the world outside the train and the rail industry to other technology sectors. Under the railway industry has invested in research and development by any standards, according to Network Rail. The new strategy seems to identify priorities for funding, which would bring the UK infrastructure manager close to global norms for investments in R & D. The launch follows the release of the entire train technical strategy (RTS) in December 2012 Businesses will continue to work with the Office of Rail Regulation to obtain financing for major projects, which will have cases of their own business. This strategy requires better security through intelligent level crossing and automated monitoring infrastructure, better performance through sustainable schedule, and better customer information through public and optimized information flow across the industry in real time. Network Rail is looking at increasing capacity of the rail network with a new control system allows the train to move closer together, and expect an increase in the cost-effectiveness of asset management, as well as continuing measures to reduce carbon emissions. This case turns, in rail transport development program, they place great emphasis earth from danger.
