PIPELINE TRANSPORT::This is one of the types of transportation mode which transport, deliver or send the specific goods through a pipe. Commonly, liquids and gases are sent by this mode. Pipelines are limited in the commodity they haul and also limited in the markets they serve.
Pipelines are very specialized transportation or carrier in that they can transport into a very limited variety product compare to others mode of transportation. Commonly, liquid and gases type of product. The pipeline that uses pneumatic tubes, using compressed air can also transport solid capsules and also coal. For transport of coal usually called as Slurry Lines because the coal is moved in a pulverized form in water.
Basically, pipeline deliver the three major commodities which are Oil (crude & products) ,Natural Gases and Chemicals. Besides that, water for community use also deliver by this mode of transportation.
ADVANTAGES:
The advantages of pipeline had been discussed in this part. Pipeline transportation offered low rates in pipeline industry. In other words, this kind of mode transportation provides low cost service compare with others mode of transportation. Pipeline transportation have large investment for the first part which is to build the pipe and also the control system but offered avery low cost at maintenance service and operation cost compare with others mode. Maintenance service provide for pipeline is a few in numbers where there is a linkage or damage, but the problem for the pipeline is too rare. So, pipelines have high fixed cost but very low variable cost. Besides, the gas and liquid industries also can use the pipeline service not only for transportation, but use it as pipeline inventory act like warehousing function. In addition, pipeline transportation also has one major advantage compare with others mode of transportation which is their dependability. Dependability means the weather condition. Compare with other modes, weather also give important role and also give a big impact to the delivery process. Fortunately, pipelines are very rarely having mechanical failures due to the bad weather condition.
DISADVANTAGE:
The disadvantages of pipeline had been discussed in this part. The speed of pipeline transportation service is too slow. Its consider as disadvantage when the demand increase dramatically, for example. But it does also can be consider as advantage when the pipeline is use as warehousing function. Pipeline also has limited number and specialization of commodities compare with others mode. It is also inflexible because of geographic factor and also need support from other modes of transportation to make a complete delivery when the pipeline is not connect to location needed. That’s means; there is difficult way to achieve a door to door service by this kind of mode.
